Pocket AI: Nokia's Feature Phones Add On-Device Assistant

Who said feature phones can't be clever? HMD has quietly outfitted four new Nokia handsets with an on-device AI button pressed right into the D-pad, turning familiar candybar designs into unexpectedly capable pocket companions. The new roster includes the Nokia 200 4G, 210 4G, 215 4G 2nd Edition and 235 4G 2nd Edition.

The brains running this show come from Sikey AI. Ask a question out loud and the assistant answers. Ask it to launch a function and the phone listens. Short interactions. Fast responses. It feels more like a helpful friend than a gimmick.

The AI assistant is free to use for the first 180 days; after that, continued access requires a paid subscription, which — oddly — must be purchased through a smartphone.

HMD hasn't ignored modern communication trends either. All four models include Xpress chat video calling with integrated VGA cameras. Don’t expect high-resolution selfies, but this feature brings low-bandwidth face-to-face calls to markets where smartphones may not be ubiquitous.

Screen sizes and panels vary across the lineup: some models keep things compact with a 2.4-inch QVGA display, while others step up to a 2.8-inch IPS panel for a roomier viewing experience without changing the resolution. Camera setups are modest. The 210 and 235 feature rear cameras, and the 235 steps up to a 2MP shooter.

Under the hood, each device runs Nokia's lightweight S30+ software and is powered by a 1,450 mAh battery. Connectivity checks the expected boxes: Bluetooth 5.0, USB-C charging, a 3.5mm headphone jack and an FM radio are all present.

HMD hasn’t shared pricing or regional availability yet. It’s a calculated move: give users a taste of AI where it didn’t exist before, then nudge them toward a subscription. Whether that will win hearts (and wallets) in the feature-phone market remains to be seen — but it’s proof that simplicity and smart features can coexist.
