Inside Huawei's Folded Future: XT2, X9 and a New Pura

The foldable phone conversation just got louder. A flurry of tips — first from a lesser-known Weibo source and then corroborated by the dependable leaker Digital Chat Station — points to two major Huawei launches before year-end: a refined tri-fold and a larger, camera-first book-style fold.

Expect a tri-fold XT2 alongside a beefed-up Mate X9 later this year. Short sentence. Big implication. Huawei isn’t experimenting at the edges anymore; it’s trying to define the next generation of flexible hardware.

Details are still patchy. The XT2 is described as a follow-up that tightens the tri-fold mechanics introduced by the original XT line. Think fewer creases, more durable hinges, and a cleaner user experience — the kind of refinement that separates prototype from product.

The Mate X9, by contrast, reads like a more conventional play with an obvious upgrade path. The cover screen remains around 6.5 inches, but the inner display grows to about 8.15 inches, a modest yet meaningful jump from the Mate X7’s 8.0-inch interior. Battery capacity looks beefier too: expect something north of 6,000mAh versus the X7’s 5,600mAh. That’s a practical change; larger flexible panels still cost power.

Under the hood, both devices are tipped to debut with the Kirin 9050 Pro, a chip Huawei hopes will compete with the leading 3nm silicon in real-world performance, even if it likely won’t be fabricated on a true 3nm node. For context, Huawei’s current top SoC, the Kirin 9030, is produced on SMIC’s N+3 process — a 6nm-class node broadly comparable to TSMC’s N6. In short: better performance is expected, but it’s coming from clever design as much as pure node shrink.

Camera upgrades are part of the story too. The Mate X9 reportedly moves to a larger 1/1.3-inch main sensor and adds a telephoto module, with an ultra-wide likely on the roster as well. The X7 packed a 50MP 1/1.28" main shooter plus a 50MP 3.5x periscope and a 40MP ultra-wide; the X9 seems aimed at improving low-light and zoom performance without radically changing the optical formula.

Price will matter. The rumor mill pegs the Mate X9 near CNY 10,000 (roughly $1,475), a notable step under the earlier X7 base pricing. The tri-fold XT2, however, remains firmly in mystery-orbit; previous XT models launched at much higher tags, and Huawei hasn’t signaled a move toward affordability for the tri-fold niche.

One more twist: DCS suggests a small wide foldable is due next year — a probable successor to the compact Pura X. So while 2026 may bring refinement and scale, 2027 could be about variety and form-factor experiments.

Huawei’s foldable roadmap is filling in. The question now is less whether foldables will survive, and more which shapes and trade-offs will actually win users over.
