Google's New Android-to-PC Backup Appears, Samsung Excluded

Imagine your phone moving photos to your PC automatically, over Wi-Fi, without a cloud account in sight. Simple. Quiet. Local.

That scenario just moved closer to reality. A hidden information page inside the latest Google Play Services build points to an upcoming feature that backs up Android devices directly to Windows PCs when both are on the same network. The page surfaced alongside a screenshot showing the flow and the setup prompts, hinting that Google wants to offer a fast, cloud-free option for preserving photos and videos.

There’s a wrinkle. At the bottom of the page a short line reads: "Samsung phones aren't supported." Strange, yes. But not inexplicable. Samsung already ships Smart Switch, a robust toolkit for transferring and backing up data to PCs. Smart Switch, however, doesn't run automatic, continuous backups the way Google’s new option appears to be designed to do.

If the note is accurate, Samsung phones won't be able to use this automatic PC backup. According to the in-app guidance, the feature will rely on the Quick Share app on Windows. You’ll need to enable Quick Share on your PC and sign both the phone and the PC into the same Google account. Then you can choose which photos and videos you want copied to the machine over the local network.

That combination—local transfer, account linkage, and selective media sync—adds something many power users have been asking for: the convenience of automatic backups without pushing gigabytes into someone else's cloud. It also draws a clearer line between Google’s strategy and Samsung’s: one favors seamless automatic syncing across the Android ecosystem, the other strengthens its own device-specific tools.

What this means in practice is still fuzzy. The discovery is based on internal UI text and a screenshot, so timelines are unknown and Google hasn’t published formal docs. Will Samsung negotiate support, or keep this as a Google-only capability to differentiate Android partners? Will the feature land as a rolling test for Pixel and other OEM phones first? Plenty of questions remain.

Either way, the move signals a push toward more local, privacy-forward backup choices for Android users. Keep an eye on your Google Play Services updates—and your Quick Share settings—if you prefer backups that stay inside your home network.
