Rumors that OnePlus is about to go big on camera hardware have been circling for weeks, but a fresh leak pushes the story into outright bold territory: a 200-megapixel main sensor on the OnePlus 16. It reads like tech theater—more pixels, more bragging rights—but the specs suggest this is meant to be functional, not just flashy.
Tipster Digital Chat Station, who has been ahead of several OnePlus disclosures, says the company will unveil the phone in China early in October. The leaks are detailed enough to feel like peeks behind the curtain: sensor sizes, zoom ratios, even front-camera autofocus are all on the table.
The headline is a 200MP primary camera built on a 1/1.4-inch sensor. That kind of physical size matters. More surface area collects more light, which can translate into cleaner low-light shots and richer color depth when processing is done well. OnePlus appears to be reserving this large sensor for a specific sub-series model, indicating an intentional push to elevate its main-camera performance.
Complementing the main shooter is a 50MP telephoto that reportedly delivers 3x optical-like reach via a periscope layout, and the sensor is said to be a 1/1.95-inch Sony unit. There's also a 50MP ultrawide in the mix, which would give the phone a balanced three-camera setup: wide, zoom, and ultra wide—each with hefty resolution to work with.

Selfie lovers might get more than just a megapixel increase. The front camera is tipped to be a 50MP unit with autofocus. That lets the camera hunt for the sharpest plane of focus instead of relying on a fixed focal distance, so group shots and close-up portraits should come out crisper, with better subject separation.
The display is getting love too. Leaks point to a new BOE "Oriental" panel that OnePlus co-developed, using an X4 light-emitting material and a 165Hz refresh rate that applies across more of the system and apps. For supported games, the phone could push visuals up to 185Hz. OnePlus is also said to be beefing up its high-refresh tech—names like Fengchi Gaming Core and e-sports triple-core suggest gaming optimizations beyond just raw frame rates.
Other hardware notes from the same source round out the picture: a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro chipset, a surprisingly large 9,000mAh battery with 100W wired and 50W wireless charging, an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint reader, ColorOS 17 based on Android 17, stereo speakers, an X-axis haptic motor, and IP68/IP69 dust and water protection.
If the leaks hold true, OnePlus 16 is shaping up to be a camera-forward flagship with heavyweight specs across battery, display, and performance.
Leaks are one thing; real-world balance—software tuning, heat management, and image processing—will determine whether OnePlus can turn those raw numbers into photos people prefer to keep. October will tell the rest of the story.
