ARM CEO: AI Will Help Find a Cancer Cure This Generation

ARM CEO Rene Haas, head of Britain’s largest technology company, told Bloomberg that he believes artificial intelligence will discover a treatment for cancer within the lifetime of the current generation.

Haas said modeling how cancer affects genetic markers is extremely complex today but that computers will eventually solve the puzzle. He said, "AI will find a treatment for cancer that you, I or other humans today could not reach in our lifetimes. I believe in our lifetime AI will help treat cancer. Modeling a cell, a human or how cancer affects DNA markers is very complex not just for today's humans but also for the computers running AI. As more models enter systems and devices become capable of more complex processing, this puzzle will be solved."

Professor Chris Bakal, senior director at the Institute of Cancer Research, London, told Bloomberg the crucial issue will be the input data. He said, "The main question will no longer be whether to use this technology, but what input data will be used. The future of medical AI will not belong to the maker of the largest computers, but to centers that have the most precise measurements. These predictions shave years off the time to develop new treatments."

Haas also said AI will enable widespread deployment of humanoid robots within five years. He named a severe chip shortage for datacenters as the main constraint on the sector's current growth and called plans to build domestic chip fabs in the UK uneconomic.

ARM's low-power architecture now runs in about half of the world's datacenters. After unveiling a dedicated processor for Meta, the company faced more than $2 billion in demand, though supply chain challenges continue to limit its international development plans.
