YouTube is pursuing large-scale live sports rights to strengthen its paid-subscription business, entering talks to acquire bundles of live matches from major leagues.
Negotiations for NBA regional rights and World Cup interest
People familiar with the matter said YouTube has opened high-level negotiations to acquire regional streaming rights for NBA games covering roughly 20 to 25 teams. The value of that package could exceed $1 billion. The same sources said YouTube has also shown interest in acquiring rights to the FIFA men’s World Cup.

Commercial strategy, pricing, and leadership
YouTube intends to buy comprehensive, full-match packages rather than pursue single events or short tournaments, a strategy that contrasts with platforms such as Netflix. Platform managers say the goal is to offer a simple, unified viewing experience and convert viewers into paying subscribers.
- Acquire bulk, full-match rights across leagues
- Fold matches into YouTube Premium at $15.99 per month to grow recurring revenue
- Use the free YouTube tier as a marketing channel to drive Premium subscriptions
- Justin Connolly, a former senior Disney executive, joined as global head of YouTube Media and Sports to accelerate implementation
