The United States government’s newly launched AI chatbot on America.gov contradicted several public claims made by Donald Trump, including his assertions about the outcome of the 2020 presidential election and a range of economic statements.

What the chatbot said

America.gov was introduced as a central site to give citizens easier access to official information. In initial responses the site’s chatbot declined some of Mr. Trump’s claims and, citing data from the Federal Election Commission, affirmed his 2020 defeat. In a clear reply the chatbot stated: "Joseph R. Biden Jr. won the 2020 presidential election. Donald J. Trump lost." Screenshots of the exchange were circulated by MeidasTouch on X.

The chatbot also rejected claims that 25 million undocumented immigrants entered the United States during the Biden administration and disputed assertions about a broad decline in consumer prices. On trade policy, the bot told users that the cost of tariffs enacted under the Trump administration falls on American consumers rather than on foreign companies.

White House response and changes

A White House official told the New York Times that "the president and the administration have been completely transparent about issues surrounding the 2020 election, the final payment of tariffs by foreigners, and the economic benefits of cutting taxes for working families." Following public attention to the chatbot’s replies, officials said the tool would be updated with additional sources. For now, America.gov’s chatbot is refraining from answering political questions and election results, which the platform describes as outside the scope of government services.
