Audi plans to build the next-generation A8 on Porsche Panamera underpinnings at Porsche's Leipzig plant, Automotive News reports, a move that would relocate A8 assembly from Audi's Neckarsulm facility and place the flagship on Porsche's MSB rear-wheel-drive architecture.
The report, citing industry sources, says the production transfer would not be immediate. German newspaper Heilbronner Stimme places the earliest start of Porsche-built A8 assembly in 2030, which implies roughly a three-year hiatus at the top of Audi's sedan lineup after the current model ceased production in Europe.

Production status and timing
Audi officially ended production of the D5-generation A8 in Europe in February 2026, though the model remains on sale in the United States after receiving limited updates to carry it through the 2027 model year. Audi stopped taking bespoke factory orders in Germany earlier in 2026 while using remaining U.S. sales to deplete component inventories and bridge the gap before the planned hiatus.

Low volumes fed speculation that the A8 might vanish; Audi of America reported U.S. A8 sales of 1,406 units for calendar year 2025. Automotive News says Audi and Porsche discussions over production relocation have also raised internal concerns among labor unions at Audi factories.
Platform and powertrain implications
According to reporting in Mitteldeutsche Zeitung and other outlets, the switch to Porsche underpinnings would convert the A8 from Audi's current front-wheel-drive–based architecture to Porsche's MSB platform, which prioritizes rear-wheel drive. That platform change is likely to delay an all-electric A8 in the near term. Instead, sources say Audi will pursue high-performance V6 and V8 plug-in hybrid powertrains for the Porsche-built successor.

Porsche has confirmed it is evaluating scenarios for a next-generation flagship sedan, and observers link the plan to Volkswagen Group cost-saving measures and restructuring. The arrangement would mirror Audi's previous parts-sharing approach with the E-Tron GT and Porsche Taycan, which share major components and production processes.

If the plan proceeds, production would move to Leipzig with the Porsche-built A8 expected no earlier than 2030 and the model returning on MSB underpinnings with internal-combustion plug-in hybrid drivetrains rather than as an immediate battery-electric flagship.
In the interim, Audi is directing customers seeking spacious premium sedans toward the new Audi Q9 SUV, while keeping the U.S. A8 in showrooms through 2027 to use up existing parts inventories.
