BMW's next X5 M could arrive equipped with a plug-in hybrid V8, a powertrain choice that would place it squarely in the M division's current high-output plug-in strategy. The same V8-hybrid setup is reported to be shared with the M5's hybrid system and underpins the most consequential powertrain detail emerging around the X5 M programme.

The broader news is that BMW intends to field both a new internal-combustion X5 M and the brand's first all-electric X5 M badged iX5 M, with an assembly-line start penciled in for 2028. Prototypes have been spotted testing in public, and recent CGI work by Instagram creator @kelsonik gives a first digital, camouflage-free look at how the production M might present itself.

The all-new X5 architecture itself is already in production as the G65, with the long-wheelbase G78 built for China. The standard-generation X5 went on assembly in Spartanburg, South Carolina in August 2026. Visually the Neue Klasse design language carries over: a visor-like front face, very small kidney grilles, and X-shaped daytime running lights housed in slimmer headlight units. The new tailgate drops the previous split-opening layout and the rear adopts wider taillights and a sportier bumper treatment.

The interior of the new X5 follows the Neue Klasse template used across the range, with a panoramic iDrive pillar-to-pillar screen mounted low behind the base of the windscreen, a free-standing central display, an optional passenger screen, and a distinctive steering-wheel design. Expect the X5 M cabin to mirror that layout but with M-specific load screens and submenus, an exclusive steering wheel, front bucket seats, and unique trim and upholstery options.

Design preview and CGI details

In the digital render from @kelsonik the X5 M wears a deep purple paint and dry carbon elements on the lower skirts, front apron blades, rear diffuser, and side sills. The headlight graphics are slimmer while sitting beside a larger grille that evolves the current horizontal-slat motif. Bumper shapes appear inspired by the M Concept Neue Klasse, wheels are intricate, and quad exhaust outlets protrude from cutouts in the rear diffuser. M badging appears on the grille and tailgate, and the render implies a lowered ride height and more overtly aggressive bodywork than the standard X5.

Powertrain and performance

Reports indicate the X5 M may use a plug-in hybrid V8 similar to the M5. The present M5 hybrid setup produces 717 hp (535 kW/727 ps) and 738 pound-feet (1,000 Nm) of torque, with 0-60 mph (97 kph) times of 3.4 seconds for the sedan and 3.5 seconds for the touring. BMW is developing a Neue Klasse M5 facelift as well, and it remains unclear whether output will change for the next-generation M models.

As expected for an M model, engineers will retune the chassis, lower the ride height, and fit uprated brakes to manage the additional performance. Prototypes already running in public suggest BMW is still finalising those mechanical details ahead of production.

Renderings such as the @kelsonik image offer a plausible preview but are not factory-confirmed design sheets. BMW has confirmed only the new X5 line and production locations; specifics for M badging, exact power figures, and final appearance will remain tentative until BMW releases official material. Expect further prototypes and design leaks through 2027 as the company approaches the anticipated assembly-line start in 2028.
