Germany is allowing some employees to take three days of paid leave to experience Grand Theft Auto 6 when it launches, through a government-supported Bildungsurlaub course that frames gameplay as a subject of study. The course, titled "Open World Games: Lessons from a Digital World," is scheduled around the release and accepts 60 participants, with the teaching period set for 18 to 20 November.
The Bildungsurlaub scheme permits workers to use paid, recognised training leave to explore storytelling, digital culture and collaborative practice by playing open-world games. The announcement describes the course as government-funded and designed to let employees legally use their training leave for guided study of game design and player dynamics, at a time that coincides with the game’s release on 19 November 2026.
Course format, topics and limits
Open World Games is limited to 60 participants and runs online over three days, with an optional in-person follow-up event in Berlin. Participants work in supervised groups, undertake missions inside an open-world title and use their observations to examine concrete topics including narrative design, player motivation, community formation and teamwork. One module focuses on the use of hidden clues to increase player engagement, and the course materials note how brands, training programmes and workplace groups might adapt that approach to boost audience participation.
The organisers, Dein Bildungsurlaub, quoted founder Carlo Dreschl on the course aims: "Modern education must go to where people are already curious. Open worlds are built from stories, choices, communities and continuous problem solving. Those features make them powerful learning environments. Like many educational providers, we have used role play, simulation, game mechanics and reward systems in training before, but with Open World Games we want to bring that approach to a whole new level."

Among those signed up is Victoria, a 23-year-old accountant from Berlin. She said she was curious to see what she could learn and hoped the course might change a repetitive routine and give her fresh ways to handle persistent problems. "Maybe taking part in a high-speed chase in the game will later help me deal better with stressed customers," she said.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old and have access to a suitable device and a legitimate copy of an open-world game. The course explicitly requires a legal game licence and is presented as a recognised training programme that qualifies for paid Bildungsurlaub time off.
This response in Germany follows wider concerns about staff absences around the game’s launch. Estimates show requests for leave on the release date, 19 November, rose by 17 percent. Regulators and employers elsewhere have also flagged the issue: Australia's workplace regulator published guidance about paid leave ahead of the release, and in July an image circulated online of a notice from the Ninth Engineer Battalion at Fort Stewart, Georgia, indicating soldiers who extended their contracts could receive a four-day incentive leave to play GTA 6.
Rockstar Games plans to release GTA 6 on 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and Series S. The Grand Theft Auto series carries an adult age rating, and the organisers and publisher both note that parental oversight is necessary to control access for children and teenagers.
