Introduction: A Farewell with Heritage
BMW of North America used Monterey Car Week to give the 8 Series Gran Coupe a memorable send-off with the new 2026 BMW M850i Edition M Heritage. Revealed at Pebble Beach and shown alongside an E31 850CSi painted in the same hue, the special model revives an iconic palette: Bright Red (marketed in Germany as Hellrot Uni). Based on the four-door G16 8 Series Gran Coupe, this limited-edition M850i blends classic BMW Individual colors with modern M performance and luxury.
Production and Market Positioning
BMW will build just 500 examples of the M850i Edition M Heritage worldwide, positioning it as a collector-focused, limited-run model that elevates the standard M850i in exclusivity and specification. While BMW has not disclosed the exact U.S. allocation, the company confirmed that most of the 500 units will be allocated to the American market. Production is scheduled to begin in November 2025, with deliveries expected in early 2026.
Design and Exterior Details
The Edition M Heritage is offered in five throwback BMW Individual finishes inspired by the E31 era: Bright Red, Mauritius Blue metallic, Cosmos Black metallic, Oxford Green metallic, and Daytona Violet metallic. Each car features a carbon-fiber roof with tri-color M stripes, 20-inch Orbit Grey Style 895M wheels, M Sport brakes with black calipers, and M Shadowline headlights and Extended Shadowline trim. Carbon-fiber mirror caps, previously reserved for the M8 family, are standard on this edition—underscoring its bespoke character.

Interior, Materials and Technology
Inside, the M850i Edition M Heritage upgrades the cabin with M Sport seats in BMW Individual Black Full Merino Leather and Alcantara featuring a diamond pattern. Alcantara extends to the headliner, dashboard, and upper door panels, while tri-color M stitching adorns the seats, seat belts, and door trims. A non-illuminated M badge is set into the headrests, and the center console is trimmed in matte carbon fiber with a glass shift lever and glass iDrive controller. Personalized touches include engraved doorsills and a cupholder cover marked "M850i Edition M Heritage" and "1/500." Standard equipment also includes the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound system and the Driving Assistance Professional Package.
Performance and Powertrain
Under the hood sits BMW’s proven N63 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 producing 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. Power is routed to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission and BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system. BMW claims a 0–60 mph time of 3.9 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph, delivering genuine grand touring performance that complements the model’s luxury appointments.

Pricing and Availability
Pricing for the 2026 BMW M850i Edition M Heritage starts at $130,400, plus $1,175 destination. With its limited production run, historic color choices, and upgraded materials and tech, the Edition M Heritage targets enthusiasts and collectors who want an exclusive, performance-oriented closing chapter for the 8 Series Gran Coupe line.
How It Compares
Compared with a standard M850i, the Edition M Heritage adds bespoke BMW Individual colors, unique carbon-fiber exterior bits, upgraded interior materials and trim, and exclusive badging—while retaining the same potent twin-turbo V8 and all-wheel-drive chassis. It’s closer in spirit to previous M-badged limited editions, offering a stronger collector appeal than a factory-spec M850i while avoiding the full-on track focus of an M8.
