Ram adds Cummins diesel to Power Wagon, boosts payload and tech
Ram's 2027 Heavy Duty range arrives with targeted updates that matter to truck buyers: a first-ever Cummins diesel for the off-road Power Wagon, a new Payload Upgrade Package that pushes 2500-class hauling numbers, and arguably the most screen real estate in the segment. These changes aim squarely at owners who need capability, ruggedness and modern cabin technology in one package.
Cummins comes to the Power Wagon
For the first time, Ram is offering the Power Wagon with the 6.7-liter Cummins High-Output inline-six turbo-diesel. That mill produces 430 horsepower and a huge 1,075 lb-ft of torque, routed through a TorqueFlite ZF eight-speed automatic to all four corners. The diesel option dramatically raises utility over the standard gas model: Ram advertises nearly 20,000 pounds of towing capacity and payloads up to about 3,000 pounds in certain configurations.

To accommodate the heavier diesel powertrain, Ram has revised the Power Wagon's underpinnings. The factory front winch and the highly-flexible Articulink front suspension give way to a stiffer frame design. The truck rolls on standard 20-inch wheels wrapped in heavier-load-rated 34-inch Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires. For buyers who prefer the 6.4-liter HEMI V8, Ram brings back the optional beadlock-capable wheel.
Emergency Response Vehicle and heavy-duty upgrades
Ram also adds a purpose-built Ram 2500 Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) — the brand's first pursuit-capable 3/4-ton HD pickup. The ERV is powered by the 6.4-liter HEMI V8, features dual 400-amp alternators and a 4.10 axle ratio, and is aimed at law enforcement, fire and rescue fleets. Ram says the ERV will be available late 2026.

Meanwhile, the 3500 4x4 SRW Regular Cab (8-foot box) and Crew Cab (6-foot box) with the 6.4 HEMI now boast a maximum GVWR of 11,440 pounds — a 400-pound increase over 2026 models.
Payload Upgrade Package: big numbers for 2500 owners
A standout for 2500 buyers is the new Payload Upgrade Package, available on most trucks equipped with the 6.4 HEMI. For an $835 option, GVWR rises from the previous 10,000 pounds to 11,040 pounds and maximum payload climbs to 4,580 pounds. The package bundles leaf springs and an anti-spin rear differential to prioritize load-hauling capability.
Highlights at a glance:
- Cummins 6.7L HO diesel: 430 hp, 1,075 lb-ft torque
- Nearly 20,000 lb towing and up to ~3,000 lb payload in certain specs
- Payload Upgrade Package: GVWR 11,040 lb; payload 4,580 lb; $835
- 3500 GVWR increased to 11,440 lb (up 400 lb)
- Ram 2500 ERV: 6.4L HEMI, dual 400A alternators, 4.10 axle ratio

Appearance, options and suspension choices
Ram adds cosmetic and equipment tweaks: a new 'Symbol of Protest V8' fender badge appears on HEMI-equipped heavy-duty trucks, and Satin Black finish is now available for Tradesman, Black Express, Warlock, Rebel, Power Wagon and Night Edition models. The Sport Appearance and Night Edition packages are now offered on trucks with Level 1 and Level 2 equipment groups (previously limited to Level 1 Plus/Level 2 Plus). Rebel and Power Wagon models with the 6.4 HEMI can also be fitted with a Warn electric winch as a standalone option.
On suspension, the Ram 2500 offers a five-link coil setup or optional automatic-leveling rear air suspension. The 3500 retains its Hotchkiss-style leaf spring rear architecture, with an exclusive supplemental air suspension available as an option.
Cabin tech: the biggest screens in the segment
Ram continues to push its in-cab tech lead. Heavy-duty models come standard with a 14.5-inch Uconnect 5 touchscreen plus a segment-first 10.25-inch passenger display, complemented by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a digital rearview mirror. That trio gives Ram heavy-duty buyers what the brand calls the most screen coverage in the class — a key differentiator in a market where connectivity and usability increasingly influence purchase decisions.

Colors, RamBox and production
Laramie buyers gain RamBox storage and new optional body-color fender flares. New exterior paints include Serrano Green Metallic and Tank Clear-Coat, expanding the palette for buyers who want a distinctive look.
Production of the 2027 Heavy Duty trucks will begin this summer at Ram's Saltillo Truck Assembly Plant in Mexico, with dealer arrivals expected in August. Pricing hasn't been published yet; Ram will likely announce final MSRPs closer to the on-sale date.
Ram’s 2027 updates blend off-road heritage with heavier-duty capability and modern cabin tech. For buyers who tow, haul or run public-safety fleets, these changes deliver tangible utility — and for enthusiasts, the Cummins-powered Power Wagon finally gives a diesel option that matches the model's rugged reputation.

Payload Upgrade looks tempting, 4,580 lb is nuts. $835 seems fair, but stiffer springs = rougher ride? Also losing the factory winch on diesel PW sounds odd. tradeoffs
Whoa, Cummins in a Power Wagon?! 1,075 lb-ft... insane. Bet it hauls everything now. Hope they didnt ruin the off road charm tho, curious about fuel economy
