One UI 8.5 Adds Display Guard for Photosensitive Users
Samsung's upcoming One UI 8.5 for Galaxy phones appears to include a new safety feature designed to protect users from photosensitive epilepsy (PSE).
Images of Samsung's One UI 8.5 surfaced last week showing large UI design changes for Galaxy devices. Since then, additional firmware leaks have revealed a potentially important accessibility option: automatic dimming when the display detects flashing or strobe effects that could trigger photosensitive epilepsy.
According to code examined by Android Authority, One UI 8.5 includes logic that lowers screen brightness for parts of video content containing repeated strobe effects above a set threshold. The firmware description explains:
When watching video content, any part that includes a repeated strobe effect exceeding a certain level will be dimmed. This effect can only work on the display of this device and may not be supported depending on some app development environments.
The discovery also hints that Samsung may offer customization controls, letting users choose the flash intensity threshold that triggers the dimming and adjust how much the brightness is reduced. Those options would give users greater control over how and when the protection activates.

One limitation in the description is the reference to video content, which suggests the feature may only apply to videos and not to games or other apps. If true, that would limit its usefulness for users who encounter strobe effects outside of video playback.
Samsung is widely expected to debut One UI 8.5 alongside the Galaxy S26 series, which is rumored to include display upgrades. It remains to be seen whether the PSE protection will be exclusive to new flagship hardware or rolled out to older Galaxy devices through software updates.
