Something quietly shifted in flagship land this week: the word "Ultra" is suddenly under threat of becoming a regional honorific rather than a global badge.
Insiders on social platforms — notably tipster Kartikey Singh — say Xiaomi has shelved the Xiaomi 18 Ultra. The next lineup will reportedly consist of the Xiaomi 18, Xiaomi 18 Pro, and Xiaomi 18 Pro Max. Shorter roster. Cleaner tiers. And an Ultra model missing from the international playbook.
The culprit is painfully ordinary: component costs. DRAM and NAND prices shot up through 2026 as AI workloads gobbled memory capacity. When memory and storage climb, so does the bill for extravagant hardware: 200MP quad-camera arrays, extra RAM buckets, massive flash modules. That kind of spec sheet pushes retail beyond what most buyers will tolerate.
Xiaomi’s pause looks tactical, not terminal. Expect the Ultra nameplate to return with the Xiaomi 19 Ultra, perhaps in late 2027 or early 2028 when supply and pricing calm down. In the meantime, the 18 Pro Max is being positioned as the brand’s top-tier offering.

It’s not just Xiaomi rethinking global rollouts. Singh’s reporting suggests Oppo and Vivo may also limit their next-generation Ultras — the Oppo Find X10 Ultra and Vivo X500 Ultra — to the Chinese market when they debut in the first half of 2027. Both companies have stayed mum, so treat this as an early signal rather than confirmation.
If the trend holds, Samsung’s Galaxy S27 Ultra could be the only Ultra‑branded phone readily available outside China for the near future.
What does this mean for buyers and makers? For consumers, the Premium space will still exist, but the naming and regional strategies will change: expect more global launches under Pro Max banners, while camera-first, top‑tier Ultrabooks remain exclusive or delayed. For manufacturers, it’s a balancing act — keep headline specs to win attention, but keep price sensible enough to sell at scale.
In short: chips and their costs are reshaping how the flagship ladder gets built. Keep an eye on the next launch cycle; it may tell us whether Ultra becomes a rare trophy or simply evolves into another regional marketing play.
