Meet Huawei Mate 80 Pro Max & RS: Dual-Telephoto Flagships

4 Minutes

Huawei has expanded its Mate 80 family in China with two headline models: the Mate 80 Pro Max and the Mate 80 RS Ultimate Design. Both push imaging and endurance forward with dual telephoto setups and big 6,000mAh batteries, while the RS model emphasizes premium materials and extra RAM.

Big screen, bigger ambitions: Mate 80 Pro Max

The Mate 80 Pro Max builds on the Pro model with a larger 6.9-inch dual-layer OLED LTPO display that refreshes at 120Hz and can hit a blistering 8,000 nits peak brightness. Under the hood it runs on Huawei's flagship Kirin 9030 Pro chipset paired with up to 16GB of RAM and as much as 1TB of internal storage, all wrapped inside HarmonyOS 6 with fresh UI tweaks and AI features.

  • Display: 6.9-inch dual-layer OLED LTPO, 120Hz, up to 8,000 nits peak
  • Chipset: Kirin 9030 Pro with up to 16GB RAM and 1TB storage
  • Cameras: Quad rear array with dual telephoto lenses and Huawei's 2nd-gen Red Maple imaging chip
  • Front camera: 13MP with 3D depth sensing
  • Battery & charging: 6,000mAh, 100W wired and 80W wireless charging
  • Other: IP68 + IP69, dual-band Wi‑Fi 6, Bluetooth 6.0, satellite comms, NFC, USB‑C 3.1 Gen1

The rear camera stack is especially ambitious: a 50MP primary sensor with variable aperture and OIS, a 40MP ultrawide, a 50MP telephoto macro with OIS (f/2.1), and a 50MP periscope telephoto offering 6.2x optical zoom and OIS. Huawei pairs the lenses with its Red Maple imaging chipset to boost computational photography and low-light performance.

Ultimate Design: when luxury meets performance

The Mate 80 RS Ultimate Design shares most of the Pro Max’s hardware — same Kirin 9030 Pro, display, camera array and battery — but swaps in premium materials and a higher baseline RAM configuration. The RS ships with 20GB of RAM as standard, a titanium mid-frame and 3rd-gen basalt tempered Kunlun glass protecting the display.

Physically the RS feels weightier at 249g (the Pro Max is 239g), while both models keep a slim 8.25mm profile. The RS also reimagines the rear camera module and rear panel finish, available in Hibiscus Purple, Jet Black and Pure White.

Why the dual telephoto setup matters

Having two telephoto lenses — one long-range periscope and one tele-macro — gives photographers flexibility: cleaner long-distance shots from the periscope and detailed close-ups from the tele-macro without relying purely on digital zoom. Together with multiple 50MP sensors and Huawei’s imaging silicon, the system aims to deliver sharper, more versatile photos across distances.

Connectivity, durability and extras

Both phones offer a comprehensive feature set for power users: IP68 + IP69 dust and water resistance, stereo speakers, an infrared blaster, satellite communication support for emergencies, NFC, and USB‑C 3.1 Gen1. Wireless and wired charging options make the 6,000mAh battery easy to top up fast.

Pricing and availability

Huawei priced the Mate 80 Pro Max starting at CNY 7,999 (about $1,125) for the 16GB/512GB model, while the 16GB/1TB variant is CNY 8,999 (roughly $1,265). The Mate 80 RS Ultimate Design is positioned as the premium outlier: CNY 11,999 ($1,690) for 20GB/512GB and CNY 12,999 ($1,830) for 20GB/1TB.

Colors for the Pro Max include Aurora Blue, Polar Day Gold, Polar Region Silver and Polar Night Black. If you want a flagship that marries cutting-edge camera hardware with indulgent materials and extreme charging speeds, Huawei’s new Mate 80 high-enders are worth a close look.
