Because the algorithm prioritized political posts and actors—especially conservative ones—more often than the traditional media sources these users would otherwise encounter.

Switch the feed to chronological and you might expect attitudes to snap back. They didn’t. The group that returned to the timeline showed no meaningful reversal in political stance or follower patterns. The algorithm’s influence lingered even after users went back to chronological ordering. Think of it like a wave pushing a boat: you can cut the engine, but the boat keeps drifting for a while.

The study concludes that social-media recommendation systems can meaningfully nudge political preferences, and those effects can persist beyond the period of direct exposure.

These findings align with prior concerns about algorithmic amplification and political polarization, but this research adds hard evidence from a randomized field trial—rare in studies of platform influence. Using a browser add-on to capture feed content and pairing that with pre- and post-surveys gave the team a granular view of how exposure, following behavior, and self-reported attitudes interact.

Publishers and platforms often present feeds as neutral. But recommendation systems are not mirrors; they’re filters and amplifiers shaped by engagement signals and design choices.
