Meta Eyes Massive Share Sale to Fuel AI Ambitions Soon

Meta may be preparing to tap the equity market for tens of billions of dollars to bankroll a new phase of AI investment. The Financial Times says senior executives are exploring “creative” financing options as the company braces for a hefty rise in AI-related spending.

Why the urgency? Building and running AI infrastructure is expensive. Data centers, specialized chips, and talent all demand capital at a scale few corporations have faced before. After Alphabet’s own multibillion-dollar share offering this week, chatter inside Meta intensified. Investors reacted quickly: the stock slid roughly 6.6 percent after the initial report.

This would mark a notable shift for the biggest tech players. Historically, many of them leaned on internal cash flows. Now they are increasingly turning to capital markets—equity and debt—to accelerate the buildout of AI systems. Meta already signaled that pivot last year when it launched what could become a record $30 billion bond package and struck a $27 billion financing deal with Blue Owl Capital.

And the company’s ambitions have grown. In April, Meta raised its annual capital expenditure forecast to between $125 billion and $145 billion. That level of spending explains why executives are looking beyond traditional funding routes and debating whether a fresh share sale is the cleanest, quickest way to refill the war chest.

That said, nothing is locked in. According to people briefed on the matter, Meta has not yet retained any banks to lead a sale and may ultimately decide against issuing new equity. Strategic options remain on the table—debt, partnerships, or even slower deployment—all viable depending on market conditions and internal priorities.

Meta’s deliberations underscore a broader change across Big Tech: financing AI at scale is transforming how these companies plan and pursue growth.

Whether a share sale happens or not, the episode highlights a larger question: how will the next wave of AI infrastructure be funded, and which companies will emerge with the most durable advantage
