Imagine tiny notifications and navigation arrows floating just where you look, without pulling out a phone. Samsung is moving beyond audio-only eyewear and has begun work on a second-generation smart glasses prototype that puts a color microdisplay inside the frame.

The company reportedly sent specifications to Samsung Display asking for a microdisplay fit for standard eyewear — a panel roughly 0.2 inches or smaller paired with an optical magnifier to project clear, glanceable information into the wearer’s field of view. The brief reads like the checklist of a user experience obsessed engineer: compact form factor, crisp text legibility, minimal color depth, and a price target that won’t make early adopters wince.

Don’t expect full-screen video. Samsung’s focus is utility: short text lines, system icons, notifications and turn-by-turn arrows that sit in front of the eye rather than off to the side. To that end, engineers are prioritizing sharp contrast and readable UI elements over rich color fidelity — the panel may only support 4-bit gradation, enough for distinct brightness steps but far fewer tones than a phone display.

There’s a delicate balancing act at play. A wider field of view makes information feel natural, but it also pressures color output, brightness and cost. Will the company go monocular, feeding one eye, or binocular, duplicating displays across both? Each choice alters ergonomics, battery life and how immersive—or intrusive—the system feels.

Technically, three microdisplay routes are on the table. White OLED on silicon with color filters, often called W-OLEDoS, looks like the pragmatic choice thanks to better yields and lower manufacturing costs. RGB OLEDoS can render color more directly but carries heavier production overhead and lower yields. MicroLED-on-silicon (LEDoS) promises brightness and efficiency, yet full-color integration and consistent yields remain thorny hurdles.

Expect a device engineered for quick glances, not for movie nights.

Timing is straightforward but still tentative: sources point to a launch window in the latter half of 2027 or the first half of 2028. That gives Samsung time to decide on panel technology, finalize whether one or two displays make the cut, and tune optics so notifications land where your eyes expect them.

If Samsung can strike the right trade-offs between field of view, color, and cost, these glasses could reshape how we handle small, frequent tasks—answering a message, checking a direction—without abandoning the rhythm of a day. Will people actually wear them? That question now sits squarely with Samsung and the market it hopes to tame.
