The quiet revolution in offices didn't happen with drums or headlines. It came with a line of code and a chat window, and it arrived right when many seasoned professionals thought their experience would protect them.

Jeffrey Sanznbaker, an economics professor at Boston University, dug into U.S. government employment records and matched them against an AI-exposure index to see who really felt the shock. He compared labor-market outcomes for people aged 55 and older before and after the arrival of ChatGPT in 2022. The results were startling: the old assumption that experience buys job security no longer holds in many white-collar professions.

Think of it this way: expertise used to be armor. Decades on the job, institutional memory, and pattern recognition made older workers valuable—and harder to replace. Then came tools that replicate those very cognitive tasks. Suddenly, the hedge offered by experience began to fray.

Which roles suffered most? The data points to office and specialist jobs. Senior computer programmers and experienced accountants and auditors saw a dramatic rise in exits. Between 2014 and 2025, the share of older computer programmers leaving the labor force increased by more than 25 percent. Seasoned accountants and auditors recorded roughly a 22 percent rise in departures. By contrast, hands-on trades like house painting saw only about a 2 percent uptick over the same period.

So was this a wave of early retirements by choice? Sanznbaker argues no. The pattern looks like displacement rather than voluntary exit. Workers who once expected to keep contributing well into later life found themselves facing layoffs and involuntary unemployment as AI tools entered routine workflows.

Experience no longer guarantees longevity at work when software can mimic the cognitive tasks that once defined a career.

The policy implications are urgent. Training and reskilling programs aimed at younger cohorts won't be enough if older employees are being nudged out before they can transition. Employers, unions, and lawmakers need to consider how to preserve dignity and opportunity for an aging workforce while still reaping productivity gains from automation.
