Samsung Bets Big on Wider Galaxy Z Fold8 Over Ultra

A supply-chain report suggests Samsung plans to produce 2.8M units of a wider Galaxy Z Fold8—more than the Fold8 Ultra and Flip8. Rumored specs include Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, a 7.6" inner display and a 4,800mAh battery.

Samsung appears to be placing a bigger wager on width. Quietly, and well before the Galaxy Unpacked stage on July 22, a supply-chain leak suggests the company is planning to roll out more units of a wider Galaxy Z Fold8 than its Ultra or Flip siblings.

Industry contacts cited in the report say Samsung has asked suppliers to manufacture roughly 2.8 million units of the wide Galaxy Z Fold8. By contrast, the Fold8 Ultra is tagged for about 2.0 million units, while the clamshell Galaxy Z Flip8 is slated for near 1.5 million. Numbers like these matter. They hint at where Samsung expects demand to land.

Why the tilt toward a wider Fold? One clue is the rumored 4:3 aspect ratio, which leans into a tablet-like canvas rather than the narrow, phone-first foldable many of us have seen. That extra real estate could make the Fold8 a more persuasive device for multitasking, media and productivity — and it puts the handset in a fresh kind of crosshairs with Apple, which itself is rumored to push a larger, premium iPhone Ultra come September.

The rumored spec sheet reads like a flagship checklist: a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy chip at the core, a 7.6-inch inner display paired with an approximately 5.5-inch cover screen, a 4,800mAh battery and a dual-rear camera array. Not revolutionary, perhaps, but a clear statement of intent: performance plus a more expansive screen experience.

Production targets also tell a story about Samsung's commercial strategy. Prioritizing the wide Fold8 suggests confidence in buyers trading pocket convenience for a larger, more tablet-esque interface. It also signals how Samsung expects to balance inventory across its foldable line at launch — more wide Folds, fewer Ultras and Flips.

This is a tactical bet: favor the wider form factor now, and hope demand follows.

Of course, supply projections are only part of the equation. Price, carrier deals, and how well the new software leverages that wider real estate will all matter. Samsung's Unpacked event on July 22 should confirm the details and, crucially, the prices that will determine whether consumers bite.

Will the market reward a broader screen and a slightly different approach to foldables? We won't have to wait long to find out.
