His premise is simple and startling. Machines get dramatically better. Production costs collapse. Goods and services become so abundant and cheap that the traditional role of money — a medium to allocate scarce resources — evaporates. Musk asked the question plainly: if robots and artificial intelligence can make far more than any person could use, what exactly are we buying with currency?
If robots and AI produce more goods and services than any human could ever consume, currency simply loses its purpose.
He tied two timelines to this vision. One is a decade-long forecast for mass production and dramatically lower costs for everyday items. Services, manufacturing, even logistics could be handled by autonomous systems and humanoid machines, shrinking the economic role of wages as the primary means of access.

Companies could monetize ecosystems, data, or exclusive experiences rather than basic goods. All that said, the path to a money-less future is neither automatic nor tidy. Technology alone doesn't solve distribution, energy constraints, rare materials, or the political friction that follows mass displacement of labor. There are ethical knots to untie.
