A shelf photo and a few committed tweets have just complicated the rumor landscape: retail packaging in the U.S. is listing certain cases as compatible with both the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 18 Pro, and accessory makers are already talking.
Mark Gurman flagged the image on X, pointing out that Best Buy stores in the U.S. have the boxes on their shelves. Short, clear, and suddenly meaningful. Then a CEO at another accessory brand said his suppliers tell the same story — which pushed this from a curious find to a pattern worth watching.
He went further when asked about the Pro Max: according to what he’s hearing, iPhone 17 Pro Max cases should fit the iPhone 18 Pro Max as well. That runs headlong into earlier leaks claiming both new Pro models would be thicker than their predecessors. So which is right?

There are a few plausible explanations. The leaks about extra thickness might be off. Accessory makers, working on tight schedules, sometimes reuse molds and hope small dimensional changes won’t break fit. Or Apple could have tweaked internal hardware without altering the exterior footprints that matter for cases.
What actually determines compatibility is simple: camera bump alignment, button placement, and MagSafe magnet positioning. If those features haven’t shifted, many current Pro cases could fit the next generation with no drama. If they have, the difference will be obvious the moment someone tries a fit test.

If these listings are accurate, a large chunk of iPhone 17 Pro cases may carry over to the iPhone 18 Pro — a win for buyers and third-party makers alike.
We won’t get definitive answers until Apple’s rumored September 8–9 event and the first hands-on reviews. Until then, the packaging on a store shelf and a few supplier whispers are as close as we have to a preview. Will Apple keep hardware continuity where it matters, or will the rumor mill leave us rooting for a happy accident?
