Citroen has confirmed the 2CV will return as a four-door electric hatch intended for mass production in late 2028, reviving the classic with retro styling, compact packaging and a targeted price of 15,000 euros.
Design and packaging
The production 2CV leans fully into a retro design language rather than making a cautious nod to the past. Exterior cues include a sloped, ridged bonnet, round protruding headlights on separate fenders, flat body panels and a retractable fabric roof. Citroen says the body is more muscular, with a wider track and 19-inch wheels that fill the arches in a way the original never did, while retaining the familiar "tin snail" character in an updated form.

The car measures 3.76 metres in length, roughly 0.2 metres shorter than the original 2CV. Citroen says the compact footprint is intended to ease urban parking and help keep production costs down, a factor it links directly to the 15,000 euro price target. Carscoops quoted that equivalent figures were reported as approximately 16,800 US dollars and 12,700 British pounds.

Interior details and drivetrain plans
Inside, the 2CV aims to echo the original's simplicity without feeling cheap. The cabin includes removable bench seats intended to be used for picnics and a portable basket that sits on the floor serving as a centre console and storage container. Unusual period details are preserved, including dedicated egg storage in the door, a single-spoke steering wheel and a gear lever that emerges from beneath the dash. Citroen links these touches directly to the car's origin story, which called for a vehicle that could carry a basket of eggs across rough ground without breaking them.

Citroen has not released powertrain or battery specifications. The company cautions that the 15,000 euro target will constrain peak speed and driving range, so technical details are expected to be simple and pragmatic. As a rough benchmark, the base Renault Twingo has a 60 kilowatt electric motor and a 262 kilometre range, a figure Carscoops suggested may offer a reference point for the new 2CV's capabilities. Citroen says further technical details will be announced as the production version is prepared.

Carscoops reported, citing Chris Chilton, that the revival follows decades of interest in Citroen's heritage and that previous chief executives had repeatedly rejected a 2CV comeback. More than 3.8 million original 2CVs were sold between 1948 and 1990. The production 2CV is scheduled to make its global debut at the Paris Motor Show in 2028, marking 80 years since the original model was unveiled at the same event.
