Visa and Mesh launch global stablecoin spending at point-of-sale
International payments giant Visa and crypto payments platform Mesh have unveiled a partnership that lets users spend stablecoin and other crypto balances directly at more than 175 million merchant locations worldwide. The integration removes the need for a new physical card or a separate bank account: users can tap their phone at a contactless terminal or pay at online checkout while merchants receive local fiat currency instantly.
How the integration works
Mesh will operate as the behind-the-scenes on‑ramp, handling identity verification (KYC), asset routing and real-time fiat conversion so users experience a seamless checkout. At the point-of-sale (POS), the system converts stablecoin into the merchant’s currency at transaction speed — typically within a fraction of a second — so there are no visible delays or extra steps for buyers or sellers.
The acceptance network covers over 175 million locations across more than 200 countries and territories. Visa’s global payments infrastructure, which supported roughly $14.2 trillion in processed volume in fiscal 2025, provides the rail for fiat settlement, while Mesh supplies the crypto rails and compliance layer.
Market context and adoption outlook
Crypto ownership continues to grow: industry research estimates about 774 million crypto holders by June 2026. Despite that expansion, digital assets have remained peripheral in everyday retail spending because of technical friction and cumbersome cash-out processes. Previous solutions typically required users to liquidate crypto into a bank account or obtain a platform-specific card before spending.
This joint solution aims to close that “last-mile” gap. By converting digital holdings to fiat at checkout, it boosts merchant acceptance and simplifies consumer crypto payments without forcing buyers to move assets manually or merchants to reconfigure their payment systems.
Early adopters, compliance and industry timing
Payment services such as Kalshi, Felix Pago and Majority are among the first to activate Mesh’s technical stack. The launch comes as the industry converges on regulatory requirements and real-world payments use cases — notably around the upcoming GENIUS regulatory deadline in early 2027 — and as major events like Money20/20 USA in Las Vegas spotlight payments innovation.
Financial institutions and payment providers are actively pursuing practical, compliant ways to enable stablecoin-based commerce. Mesh’s model — combining KYC, routing and instant fiat settlement — targets both consumer convenience and regulatory adherence, making it a viable path for banks and merchants exploring crypto-enabled payment rails.
Implications for merchants, consumers and developers
For merchants, this model preserves existing point-of-sale infrastructure while opening an additional customer payment channel. Consumers gain a frictionless path to use stablecoins for everyday purchases, potentially increasing the spend share of digital assets. For developers and fintech partners, Mesh and Visa’s architecture offers a blueprint for integrating crypto balances into traditional payment flows with security and compliance built in.
As crypto payments move from niche experiments to mainstream rails, partnerships like Visa and Mesh could accelerate merchant acceptance and broaden real-world use of stablecoins and other digital assets.
