Chery unveils second-generation Tiggo 8 in China
The new Chery Tiggo 8 has been revealed in China and is scheduled to reach the home market in Q4. The fresh-look SUV closely mirrors the Lepas L8 introduced earlier this year, suggesting shared underpinnings and a common design direction across Chery’s brands. Despite the local launch timing, Chery Australia has told media there are currently no plans to bring the updated Tiggo 8 Down Under.
Dimensions and design: a larger, more mature Tiggo 8
Compared with the Tiggo 8 Pro Max sold in Australia today, the second-generation Tiggo 8 grows modestly in all directions: +29mm in length, +20mm in width, +5mm in height and a notably longer wheelbase at +115mm, according to Car News China. Those extra millimetres translate to more cabin space and a more planted stance.
Two distinct front-end treatments will be offered. One keeps the current diamond-pattern grille familiar to Tiggo 8 Pro Max and Super Hybrid buyers; the other mirrors the Lepas L8 and the incoming Tiggo X (marketed in China as the facelifted Tiggo 8 Plus), with a sleeker grille and different headlight signatures.

Powertrains and local line-up
Chery’s Australian Tiggo 8 range currently offers:
- A 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine in the Pro Max variant
- A Super Hybrid plug-in option combining a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine, an electric motor and an 18.3kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery
Powertrain details for the second-generation Tiggo 8 haven’t been published yet; Chery may carry over or revise the existing petrol and plug-in hybrid options depending on markets.
"Chery Australia is always looking at our parent company for new and exciting products to bring to the local market. However, there are currently no plans to introduce the updated Tiggo 8," a Chery Australia spokesperson told CarSauce. "The current Tiggo 8 lineup (including CSH models) will continue into 2026."
Highlights:
- Q4 Chinese market launch confirmed
- Two front fascia options, more interior space
- No Australian release planned for the updated Tiggo 8 yet

What this means for Australian buyers
For buyers in Australia, the immediate takeaway is continuity rather than change: the present Tiggo 8 range will remain available into 2026. Meanwhile, the closely related Lepas L8 is tipped to be the first to appear locally under the Lepas brand, so Australian customers could still see fresh Chery-derived SUVs arrive — just perhaps under a different nameplate.
As Chery and its sub-brands expand, watch for official specifications and local timing to be announced. The new Tiggo 8’s larger footprint and updated styling make it a stronger contender in the midsize SUV segment, but an Australian launch will depend on corporate strategy and local demand.
