Xiaomi's Wide Fold Leak: A Rival to iPhone Ultra Now

Think of a foldable that feels more like a compact tablet than a stretched phone. Sleeker when closed. More useful when open. That seems to be the direction Xiaomi is quietly exploring.

Leaked HyperOS assets have surfaced, and they point toward a wider foldable design rather than the narrow, tall approach most makers favored early on. After skipping a straight follow-up to the Mix Fold 4, Xiaomi appears to be experimenting with an entirely different ergonomics play: a device that improves one-handed comfort while offering a genuinely usable inner screen when unfolded.

Enthusiasts wasted no time dropping the leaked UI onto renders of Huawei's Pura X Max. The result looked surprisingly natural. That alignment alone is not proof, of course, but it does make the hypothesis feel less speculative and more tactical: Xiaomi testing a widescreen template that could accommodate more app layouts and richer multitasking.

Leaks float several names for the phone — Mix Fold 5, 18 Fold, even 17 Fold in some corners of the rumor mill — and a few hardware details have crept out. The camera stack reportedly includes Leica collaboration and a 200MP primary sensor, supported by a trio of lenses to handle everything from ultrawide to telephoto duties. In short: imaging ambitions are high.

Under the hood, insiders mention Xiaomi's in-house Xring O3 chipset as the likely brain. Developing core silicon and polishing HyperOS multitasking would be a sign the company is doubling down on vertical integration. Expect a refined hinge mechanism too; when you widen the display, hinge engineering becomes less forgiving of play or wobble.

There are still blanks to fill. Xiaomi has not confirmed the device, and specs from early leaks tend to shift before launch. What the HyperOS traces do indicate is that software and hardware work is well underway, not just a mockup on a forum. If the timeline holds, China could see a debut around August 2026, with international availability left to be sorted later.
