Inside Samsung's Push for a 10-inch Rollable Phone Soon

Picture this: a phone that slips into your pocket like any other and, with a subtle slide, becomes a near-tablet. Small one moment. Vast the next. That’s the promise of rollable displays, and Samsung is racing to make it real.

South Korea’s Maeil Business reports Samsung Display is accelerating work on a commercial rollable handset, aiming for a first-half 2028 debut — possibly tied to the Galaxy S28 family — under the rumored name Galaxy Z Slide. Early whispers point to a 10-inch, 16:9 panel at roughly 440 pixels per inch, and there’s talk of a second model arriving around 2030.

Why now? Competition. Samsung still leads foldables, but its panel share slipped hard — from about 41.8% in Q4 2025 to roughly 27% in Q1 2026, according to Omdia. Rivals are catching up, and a successful rollable would be a visible way to reset expectations and raise the engineering bar.

Engineering a rollable is a different animal than folding a screen. The display must unspool and recoil hundreds, if not thousands, of times without wrinkling or going wavy. Rollers, internal layers, and the supporting chassis all have to be bewilderingly precise, yet thin and light enough to feel like a daily driver. One misstep and the surface shows it.

Samsung has been tinkering with these ideas for years. At CES 2023 the company teased the Flex Hybrid, a blend of folding and sliding mechanics. Later at SID Display Week they demonstrated the Rollable Flex prototype, stretching a 49mm strip out past 254mm — more than five times the original span. Those demos were more than gimmicks; they were experiments in material science and mechanics.

For users, the appeal is obvious. Pocketable convenience plus a true big-screen experience without a hard crease. Think streaming movies, split-screen apps, or spreadsheets on a device that still fits in a jacket. The rub? Price and polish. Consumers will pay for novelty only if the execution feels premium.

If Samsung can marry flawless mechanics with a refined, durable finish, a rollable handset could redefine how we think about phone screens.
