In recent statements the company warned that the global shortage of memory chips shows no sign of easing. Large semiconductor vendors have redirected a big slice of production toward high-end memory used in AI servers. It's a strategic shift: factories are churning out advanced DRAM and NAND for data centers while the supply of commodity parts for consumer PCs tightens.
"Frankly, there is no light at the end of this tunnel," a Valve spokesperson said, summing up the mood inside hardware teams. Short supplies aren't abstract anymore. They are daily headaches for developers, boutique builders, and retailers trying to stock even modest quantities of parts.
What used to be routine orders—thousands of sticks of RAM or a few dozen SSDs—now require tough negotiations. Demand from hyperscalers and AI startups often puts them first in line. The result is fierce competition inside the electronics supply chain and longer lead times for everyone else.

Managers at Valve say they don't see a quick turnaround. Industry analysts echo that view: the imbalance will likely persist until AI-related demand stabilizes and manufacturers expand fab capacity. And adding new production lines or retooling plants takes time—months to years, not weeks.
Expect RAM and SSD prices to remain elevated until either AI demand cools or memory-makers scale up capacity.
