The issue first came to light in 2023, when Kia responded to early reports about the delamination of the C-pillar garnish face plate. Although a preliminary service action sought to address the problem, further attention arrived after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) received multiple complaints. When NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation contacted Kia following additional incidents in 2025, it prompted a comprehensive review.
Despite Kia’s initial belief that the detached trim posed minimal risk—since the face plate typically falls flat and is lightweight—regulators emphasized potential danger to other road users. A closer look by the automaker revealed more than 4,000 cases of missing C-pillar garnish pieces, leading to the decision for a large-scale recall.

The result is that, over time, the face plate may delaminate and loosen, eventually detaching while the vehicle is on the road.
