Galaxy XR Bootloader Unlock Opens Doors for Modders

Samsung's new Galaxy XR headset, built on Android XR with partners Qualcomm and Google, has already revealed an unexpected opening for tinkerers: the bootloader can be unlocked. For now, that means modders might be able to run custom Android ROMs on the device.

Developer toggle found — and tested

An X user discovered an OEM unlocking toggle inside the Galaxy XR's Developer Options and completed the full bootloader unlock process. That simple switch is all it takes to let enthusiasts flash custom firmware, modify system files, or experiment with alternative builds of Android XR.

Why this is surprising

Samsung has tightened bootloader access on phones with One UI 8, effectively closing the door on official unlocks for many devices. So it's notable that the Galaxy XR, released this week, exposes that option. Competitors such as Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest do not offer a comparable, user-facing path to unlocking their headsets.
