Apple could be nudging the selfie experience forward again. A recent tip from Chinese leaker WhyLab suggests the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max might ship with 24MP front-facing sensors — a noticeable step up from the 18MP cameras introduced on the iPhone 17 series and a clear break from the 12MP standards that lasted several generations.
What does that extra resolution buy you? Sharper detail in selfies, crisper video calls, and a better foundation for portrait shots and computational tricks. Higher pixel counts don’t automatically solve low-light woes, but more pixels paired with smarter processing can improve texture and edge definition in difficult lighting.
WhyLab calls the upgrade a strong possibility rather than a done deal. That caution matters: leaks are snapshots of supply-chain whispers, and Apple often tweaks plans right up to production. Still, this rumor isn’t coming from nowhere. Earlier reports from JP Morgan and other supply-chain sources have floated a 24MP front camera for the next Pro models too, which fits Apple’s history of gradual, iterative improvements rather than radical one-off jumps.
Hardware tweaks aren’t limited to sensors. Several leaks point to a narrower Dynamic Island on the Pro phones — roughly a 35% reduction in width according to some sources. How would Apple pull that off? One plausible approach is shifting certain Face ID components, like the IR flood illuminator, under the display. That would slim the pill-shaped cutout while preserving the TrueDepth array Apple relies on for secure authentication and depth mapping.
Rumors earlier in the cycle mentioned a top-left punch-hole camera or fully under-display Face ID, but those ideas have lost momentum. Some of the more out-there claims appear to stem from translation mishaps and speculative sourcing. At the moment, a smaller, centered Dynamic Island looks like the most consistent expectation from the leak landscape.
Release timing is familiar: the iPhone 18 family is expected to arrive around September 2026, giving Apple months to refine hardware and software. Things can and do change in that window. But if the 24MP front camera and a shrunken Dynamic Island land in the final product, the next Pro models will be another example of Apple fine-tuning the parts of the phone people use every day — the camera and the face of the device.
