Toyota Unveils the Updated Corolla Cross and New GR Sport Edition in Japan
Toyota has officially launched the facelifted Corolla Cross SUV in the Japanese market, extending its legacy of innovation and versatility. Built on the advanced GA-C platform, the latest Corolla Cross joins its sedan, hatchback, and wagon siblings in showcasing the brand's commitment to modern design and engineering excellence. Following earlier releases in Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America, the refreshed model now arrives in Japan with striking upgrades and fresh features.
Striking Exterior Design Upgrades
The facelifted Toyota Corolla Cross boasts a bold new look, highlighted by a frameless front grille, sleek LED headlights interconnected by a luminous light bar, and a wider, more assertive lower front bumper. At the rear, redesigned taillights and a sportier rear bumper shape contribute to a more contemporary presence on the road, cementing its status as a contender among modern compact SUVs.
Hybrid Powertrain and Advanced Performance
In Japan, the new Corolla Cross is available exclusively with a hybrid powertrain that pairs a naturally aspirated 1.8-liter engine with an electric motor and an electromechanical CVT. This setup produces a combined 140 horsepower, delivering both fuel efficiency and responsive performance for urban and highway driving. The model features Toyota’s E-Four electric all-wheel-drive system and an Extra Snow drive mode, ensuring confident handling in diverse weather conditions.

Introducing the Sport-Oriented GR Sport Variant
The standout addition to the lineup is the Corolla Cross GR Sport, designed for driving enthusiasts seeking a more dynamic experience. This special edition sets itself apart with uniquely styled LED lights, a more aggressive front fascia, and 19-inch alloy wheels. Red brake calipers and a specially tuned suspension add both visual and handling enhancements. Inside, the cabin is upgraded with supportive sports bucket seats, distinctive white upholstery, and exclusive GR Sport branding on the headrests.
Powering the GR Sport is a plug-in hybrid system featuring a robust 2.0-liter engine and a 10-speed Shiftmatic automatic transmission, producing a total output of 199 horsepower. The E-Four AWD system ensures optimal traction and control, making the GR Sport an exciting option in the hybrid crossover segment.
Market Positioning and Pricing
The 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross facelift is already available in Japan, with pricing starting at 2,760,000 yen for the front-wheel-drive model and 3,019,000 yen for the all-wheel-drive option. The high-performance GR Sport variant will be available from August, with an initial price of 3,895,000 yen.
