Google's Gemini Is Closing In On One Billion Users

It feels like a turning point. Google says Gemini now counts more than 950 million monthly active users, and the pace suggests it could hit the one billion mark soon.

That number came out of Alphabet's Q2 2026 earnings update, where management highlighted the assistant's rapid adoption: a threefold increase versus last year and steady gains since passing 750 million monthly users in February. Milestones like this used to be reserved for legacy products — search, Gmail, Android — but now an AI assistant is joining that club.

So how big is the shift? Big enough to reshape the landscape. OpenAI's ChatGPT reached one billion monthly users in June, and analytics firm Sensor Tower reports ChatGPT's market share among AI assistants has dipped below 50 percent for the first time. Gemini's share climbed to roughly 27.7 percent in the same period, closing the gap in a way few predicted a year ago.

Users aren't just logging in out of curiosity. They are staying for agent-driven features. Sundar Pichai pointed to tools like the Daily Brief and a personalized agent called Gemini Spark, now rolling out in the US and other markets. Short sentence. The message was simple: practical, dependable features are moving fast from lab to people.

Growth is not limited to Android. On iOS, Gemini gained traction after Google shipped a compact image generation model nicknamed Nano Banana. Appfigures data shows the Gemini app was downloaded more than 137 million times on iOS over the last 12 months, a sign that cross-platform availability matters.

Meanwhile, Google says its reworked search experience — with AI-powered Q&A — also cleared a major milestone, exceeding one billion users for that mode alone. That feature is driving a gradual lift in query volume. And behind the scenes, Google credits hardware engineering for trimming the cost of running these AI modes even as new models and capabilities arrive.
