Not every product announcement feels like a turning point. Today did. The Xiaomi 18 Fold will be the first phone to ship with CXMT's new LPDDR6 memory.

Lei Jun announced the move on Weibo, congratulating CXMT for reaching mass production and pointing out that Xiaomi's XRING O3 chip — unveiled on August 24 — is the first in the industry built to support the new memory standard. He also hinted that deeper collaboration among Chinese tech firms could become more common.

CXMT explained the engineering behind LPDDR6 in its 2026 semi-annual report: the new standard reworks internal architecture and the data transfer subsystem to deliver a clear step up from LPDDR5X. Peak throughput reaches 12,800Mbps, and chips can be configured with up to 16GB of memory. Samples have already gone to key partners while the company scales up production.

Why this matters to users is straightforward. Faster mobile RAM doesn't just sound good on a spec sheet — it smooths multitasking, shortens app launch times and gives more headroom for demanding on-device AI features that rely on sustained memory bandwidth. For CXMT, landing the first commercial handset with LPDDR6 is a strategic foothold against established suppliers like Samsung and SK Hynix.

Xiaomi hasn't published the full spec sheet for the 18 Fold yet, but the company confirmed the foldable will debut in September alongside the new SkyNomad SUV. With the memory upgrade locked in, LPDDR6 is likely to be positioned as a headline capability when Xiaomi reveals the rest of the hardware and pricing.

Whether LPDDR6 becomes the new baseline for flagship phones will depend on how quickly other vendors adopt the standard and how software—especially AI-driven features—leverages the extra bandwidth. For now, Xiaomi's move turns the 18 Fold into a practical showcase for what faster mobile memory can enable, and the industry will be watching closely as September approaches.
