Ever wished your phone number could follow you from one handset to another without the headache of swapping SIMs? Apple appears to be answering that wish with iOS 27.
A member of a MacRumors forum dug into Xcode 27’s Device Hub, simulating two iPhones and enabling a feature Apple briefly mentioned during WWDC: iPhone Handoff. The experiment surfaces how the system will manage a single phone number across two devices in surprisingly graceful fashion.

Here’s how it looks: you pick a primary iPhone and designate the second as a companion. The main eSIM stays anchored on the primary device while a companion eSIM is provisioned on the other iPhone. When you switch devices, the number follows — automatically. Unlock one phone, start using it, and the number hands off, like a baton in a relay. Short. Seamless. Noticeable.

Notifications in the Dynamic Island will flag the switch so you’re never guessing which phone is active. But not everything is mirrored: cellular settings live on the main iPhone only, so plan changes and carrier management happen from that primary device.
One important caveat: carriers must support the feature. Early support could come from the likes of T-Mobile in the US and Deutsche Telekom in Germany, according to the report, but wider rollout depends on carrier integration and agreements.

Apple is expected to release iOS 27 to the public after its upcoming iPhone event, and the company will likely flesh out the official details then. For anyone who juggles multiple iPhones for work and life, the promise of a single number that truly moves with you is a small change with outsized convenience — and one more reason to watch the iOS 27 rollout closely.
