The upgraded Volvo XC60 T8 AWD Long Range delivers up to 78 miles of electric range on a single charge, while the larger XC90 T8 AWD Long Range is rated up to 73 miles, figures Volvo says make them the longest-range plug-in hybrids on the American market.

Volvo Cars unveiled the two new long-range PHEV variants as part of a broader wave of model updates for the brand. The announcement covers an equipment and design refresh for the mid-size XC60 plus the extended-range PHEV versions of both the XC60 and the XC90, with production scheduled to begin later this fall and first American customer deliveries expected in early 2027.

According to Volvo, the roughly doubled electric range versus previous plug-in hybrid versions is achieved through a new, larger-capacity, floor-integrated battery and a more powerful electric motor. Both models remain available with mild-hybrid gasoline powertrains as alternative powertrain choices. Exact battery capacities, charging standards, charging times and U.S. pricing have not been released.

Design and interior

The refreshed XC60 receives visible exterior revisions including an updated grille, revised front bumper, reworked hood and front wings, new wheel designs, and refreshed rear elements such as a new tailgate, rear LED lamps and rear bumper. Thor’s Hammer LED headlights have been redesigned. Inside, Volvo has revised the dashboard and door panels, introduced fresh wood trim, and added Cardamom ventilated Nappa leather as an upholstery option.

Safety and technology

Volvo said the long-range PHEVs adopt the company’s latest active safety technology and an upgraded sensing suite that includes radars, cameras and other sensors. New features listed by the company include automatic emergency steering, automatic emergency braking, cyclist door alerts, lane change assist and a 360 degree camera with a 3D view. An 11.2-inch central screen running Volvo Car UX will be standard, and both the XC60 and XC90 will offer Google Gemini AI onboard.

Volvo framed the move as a step up for its electrified lineup across segments. "The XC60 is our best-selling model of all time, while the XC90 marked the beginning of our premium journey," said Hakan Samuelsson, President and CEO at Volvo Cars. "Now, as long-range plug-in hybrids, they build on those legacies and, together with the all-electric EX60, give us our strongest-ever electrified offering in the mid-size SUV segment."

The announcement follows recent updates elsewhere in Volvo’s catalog, including a refresh for the 40 series and new intelligent safety features for the all-electric EX60 and EX90. The EX40 has been removed from the American lineup. The second-generation XC60 debuted in 2017 and received a refresh in summer 2025; the second-generation XC90 was refreshed in 2019 and again in 2024.

Volvo will begin production of the XC60 and XC90 T8 AWD Long Range plug-in hybrids later this fall, with U.S. deliveries slated to start in early 2027.
