Picture someone cooking, glancing up to find a number, scanning a slideshow, all while answering a question from a friend. Looks calm, right? Silence changes everything. A pause in conversation reads as frazzled. Human beings are quick judges.
That instantaneous social read may explain a stubborn stereotype: women are better multitaskers. A new experiment by André and Diana Szameitat, published in Psychological Research, put people into a lab setting meant to mimic the messy, interrupted nature of everyday life. The catch? The study didn’t find a broad cognitive advantage for either sex. It found a single, visible behavior that shifts perception.
Researchers recruited volunteers for a multitask scenario built from five simultaneous demands rather than a single artificial test. Participants followed a recipe in a kitchen, hunted for a phone number, matched letters and numbers, monitored words on a slideshow, and took part in a conversation. Every twenty seconds a new conversational prompt arrived — quirky, open-ended questions designed to force a real reply.
Forty-one men and thirty-seven women completed the first phase. On the recipe, the search task, the matching exercise and the slideshow monitoring, men and women scored similarly. The difference emerged in the social thread. Men failed to respond to conversational prompts more than twice as often as women. When men did answer, their response speed and the quality of their replies matched the women’s. The gap was not about reasoning or language ability. It was about priority.

Why does that matter? Because conversation is highly visible. A delayed keystroke or a missed visual cue might slip by unnoticed. Silence in an exchange does not. When observers watched short videos of 160 independent viewers who hadn’t been told what to look for, they consistently judged the quieter men as less in control, less effective, less attentive, and less engaged than the women. Observers also inferred lower happiness and willingness to try. In other words, visible social responsiveness served as a mental shortcut for competence.
The Szameitats are careful. Their data do not show that men are objectively worse at juggling tasks, nor do they claim every woman keeps up a running commentary while multitasking. Rather, the study identifies an average tendency in a controlled setting: when several demands compete for attention, men were more likely to deprioritize the conversational thread.
Why that tendency exists remains unsettled. The experiment was not designed to test causation, only to reveal patterns. Explanations could be cultural — social expectations and learned habits — or they might include evolutionary influences that shaped average conversational tendencies. Personal priorities and momentary strategies undoubtedly play a role too. The point is not to essentialize either sex, but to show how a single social behavior can create a durable public impression.
This work also helps to reconcile mixed findings from earlier research. Multitasking is not one thing. It blends attentional switching, memory for pending goals, prioritization decisions, and social management. Different studies test different mixes of these components, which explains why past results about sex differences have been small or inconsistent. The Szameitats’ design brings social interaction into the mix and, in doing so, surfaces a factor that resonates strongly with everyday observers.
There are practical takeaways. In workplaces and classrooms, visible engagement often carries outsized weight in performance reviews and peer impressions. Someone who keeps up a conversation while juggling tasks may be perceived as composed and capable, even if an equally competent person chooses to focus silently on technical demands. Awareness of that bias can change how we interpret behavior — and how we evaluate others.
If you want to appear on top of a chaotic moment, it helps to answer the next question. If you want to judge someone’s ability more fairly, look beyond audible cues. The subtle trade-off between social signals and task performance may have built an entire stereotype out of a single conversational habit.
