2027 Mercedes-AMG GLA Electric Sheds Camo: Early Look

Spy shots show the 2027 Mercedes-AMG GLA Electric with most camouflage removed, revealing AMG aero bits, a triple-motor MMA setup, strong regen braking and fast 800V charging — a performance EV crossover poised to rival the AMG CLA 45.

AMG GLA Electric begins to reveal its performance bodywork

Mercedes-AMG's hotly anticipated GLA Electric prototype is finally showing more of itself. After Mercedes-Benz pulled the wraps off the standard GLA at the end of July, Affalterbach appears comfortable reducing camouflage on the AMG variant. Recent spy photos show the 2027 Mercedes-AMG GLA Electric wearing only light camo around the front and rear fascias and along the side skirts — the exact zones where the most aggressive aerodynamic and visual upgrades live.

The timing is logical: with the donor Benz now public, hiding the AMG's overall silhouette offers little benefit. What remains covered are the subtle but telling AMG details: wider side skirts, a more pronounced front lip, an AMG-specific rear diffuser and a beefier roof spoiler. Headlights are exposed in the latest prototypes, suggesting the production lamps are shared with the standard GLA.

Visual cues and expected AMG touches

From the uncovered areas we can already infer several things:

  • A sportier front lip and a traditional AMG grille treatment, echoing cues we’ve seen on the AMG CLA 45.
  • Broader side sills to visually lower the stance and improve airflow.
  • A dedicated rear diffuser and a larger roof spoiler, both typical AMG elements aimed at enhancing high-speed stability.

"The prototype has effectively lost its cloak," one photographer on the scene noted. "Only the aero bits are taped — they clearly want to keep the final spoilers and diffusers under wraps until closer to launch."

Underpinnings: MMA architecture and triple-motor punch

Like its sedan counterpart, the AMG GLA Electric will not sit on a bespoke AMG chassis. Instead it uses Mercedes’ MMA (Modular Multi-Drive Architecture) with AMG-specific calibration and hardware upgrades. Expected powertrain details mirror the AMG CLA 45’s high-performance setup: a three-motor layout driven by axial flux motors.

If AMG follows the CLA 45 playbook, output could be in the neighborhood of 500 kW (around 671 horsepower), giving the compact electric crossover genuine sprint-car performance. The heavier crossover body will likely cost a fraction of the sedan’s blistering 0–100 kph time; insiders suggest the GLA will be only marginally slower than the CLA’s 2.7-second result.

Brakes, regen and charging tech

Interestingly, the AMG GLA prototype retains solid brake rotors rather than drilled discs — the same choice seen on the CLA 45. The decision seems driven by two factors: the GLA’s slightly heavier, crossover-like mass and the enormous regenerative braking capability provided by three electric motors. AMG claims regenerative power can reach up to 300 kW, producing deceleration of about 5 m/s² (roughly 0.51 g), which takes pressure off the mechanical brakes during track use.

Charging is another strong point. The GLA benefits from an 800-volt electrical architecture that enables rapid replenishment. AMG figures point to a 10–80% charge time of about 22 minutes when connected to a high-power DC fast charger rated at 330 kW or more, allowing quick turnaround between spirited laps.

How it fits in the market

The Mercedes-AMG GLA Electric sits at the intersection of performance and practicality: a compact electric crossover with AMG dynamics. It competes with other high-performance EV crossovers that prioritize both daily usability and track-capable performance. For buyers wanting AMG branding without the low-slung footprint of a traditional hatchback or sedan, the GLA offers a compelling middle ground.

Highlights:

  • Triple axial-flux motors, likely near 500 kW total
  • MMA platform with AMG-specific tuning
  • 800-volt architecture, 10–80% in ~22 minutes (330+ kW DC)
  • Significant regenerative braking (up to 300 kW)

Expect Mercedes-AMG to reveal full specifications and final styling in the months ahead. For now, the reduced camo and exposed AMG design cues give us a clearer picture: this will be a serious performance EV in a practical crossover package — and one that’s nearly ready for showrooms.
