Elephants Outsmart Humans on a Classic Inhibition Test

Imagine smelling an apple through glass and being told you cannot simply reach for it. Strange, right? For 16 Asian elephants at a conservation center in Thailand, that puzzling scene became a laboratory for understanding self control.

Psychologists Sydney Hope and Joshua Plotnik of City University of New York led the study, recently published in PLOS One, alongside colleagues at the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation. The researchers put a familiar puzzle to the animals: a detour test where direct reach is blocked and a sideways solution must be chosen instead.

The setup was simple and clever. Elephants first learned to grab treats from a black box through an opening. Then the black box was swapped for a transparent perspex container. The fruit was visible and smelled clearly through small, sealed holes in the front. The trick was that the front was impassable. The only way to win the reward was to detour to an open side and withdraw the food with the trunk.

Why does that matter? Because resisting the urge to go straight for a visible reward is the essence of inhibitory control. It is the cognitive brake that lets an animal override immediate impulses in favor of a better, learned action. Humans show this in small ways every day. For elephants, it can influence everything from problem solving to social behavior.

On camera, the elephants mostly did the smart thing. They did not flail at the transparent surface, nor did they waste time banging at the front. Instead, they quickly moved to the side, found the opening, and retrieved the fruit. Latencies to enter the correct opening did not increase when the opaque barrier became transparent, suggesting the animals were not misled by the visibility of the reward.

They were, however, curious. Once trunks entered the perspex box some elephants spent noticeably more time exploring the interior. The see through material was novel to them, and the exploratory pause hints at a balance between caution and investigation.

The researchers then changed the box orientation so the opening sat on a different face than the animals had been trained to use. That manipulation slowed some elephants down. It revealed a typical error pattern: a momentary pull toward the previously rewarded action before the animals corrected and detoured. That hesitation acts as a valid measure of inhibitory control because it exposes a clash between what the animal knows and what it instinctively tries to do.

Age mattered. Older elephants took longer to adapt when the box orientation changed, a subtle signal that cognitive flexibility may decline with age. The authors caution this is not a sweeping claim about elephant intelligence. But it is a window into how inhibitory control and learning interact across the lifespan in a large-brained, highly social mammal.

The study adds to mounting evidence that strong inhibitory control tracks with brain size and complex social living across species.

Far from being an isolated curiosity, these findings feed a bigger story. Animals that excel at resisting impulse often navigate intricate social networks, plan future actions, and solve multi-step problems. Elephants fit that profile: they live in long-lived family groups, show empathy, and remember distant social relationships. The detour test does not prove all of that, but it dovetails nicely with what ethologists have observed in the field.

So the next time you debate ordering takeout instead of reheating leftovers, take a tip from an elephant. A little restraint can pay off. And if researchers keep asking the right questions with humble apparatus and sharp observation, we will keep finding surprising intelligence in animals we thought we already knew.
