On a noisy street in Copenhagen, the traffic rumble might be doing more than annoying residents; it could be whispering to the brain. A large Danish analysis suggests long-term exposure to urban traffic noise is linked to a subtle but measurable rise in Parkinson’s disease risk.

Researchers sifted national records for more than three million Danes aged 40 and over between 2000 and 2017. Everyone in the group was free of Parkinson’s at the study’s start. Instead of treating each residence as a single number, investigators mapped noise to the loudest side of the home and to the quietest side—because where you sleep matters.

The results were specific. For the noisiest façade, every 11-decibel increase corresponded to roughly a 3% higher risk of developing Parkinson’s. On the quieter side, each 9-decibel rise translated to about a 4% increase. If even the supposedly quiet side is noisy, the risk climbs; if it’s at least 10 dB quieter than the busy side, that quieter area appears to blunt part of the harm.

These associations held steady across men and women, different education and income levels, whether people lived alone or with others, and in both dense and sparse areas. The findings are published in JAMA Neurology and draw on detailed national exposure models coupled with health registries.

Why would sound reach into the brain? Chronic noise fragments sleep. It triggers persistent stress responses. Over time those physiological strains can fuel neuroinflammation and oxidative stress—processes that especially menace dopamine-producing neurons. Those neurons are central to Parkinson’s: when they erode, motor control and other brain functions falter.

Parkinson’s is already the world’s second-most common neurodegenerative disorder, affecting more than 11 million people today. With aging populations, that burden is expected to grow substantially in the coming decades. Small risks multiplied across cities and years matter.

So what can people and planners do? Think about bedroom placement. Seek the quiet façade. Invest in insulation, double glazing or simple behavioral fixes that protect sleep. Urban design, too, could prioritize quieter street frontages and noise-reduction measures that shield residential pockets.

Noise is often dismissed as a nuisance. This study asks us to listen differently: not just to the sound itself, but to the long-term cost it may extract from the brain.
