2027 Crosstrek in Japan Drops to Standard e-Boxer S:HEV

Japan's 2027 Subaru Crosstrek is now offered only as two well equipped grades and comes standard with the e-Boxer S:HEV powertrain, built around a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated boxer engine, dual electric motors, all-wheel drive and an eCVT replacing a chain-type continuously variable transmission. The two grades together produce a combined 194 horsepower.

For model year 2027 Subaru has narrowed the JDM Crosstrek line to Premium S:HEV and Premium S:HEV EX, both positioned as full hybrids rather than mild-hybrid variants and carrying more standard equipment to support higher starting prices.

Powertrain and efficiency

The e-Boxer S:HEV hardware centers on the 2.5-liter boxer and twin electric motors with an eCVT. Although Subaru does not state this in its release, the hybrid system is Toyota-developed technology; Subaru has nevertheless applied its own calibrations for the boxer layout rather than copying Toyota settings directly. Small engine control optimizations and other revisions for 2027 lift the official WLTC fuel economy figure to 19.5 kilometers per liter of gasoline, equivalent to 45.9 miles per gallon in the United States. WLTC testing reflects standardized conditions and is not a guaranteed real-world result.

Equipment, pricing and exterior details

The Crosstrek range in Japan now comprises two trims only: Premium S:HEV and Premium S:HEV EX. The Premium S:HEV starts at 3,833,500 yen, including the 10 percent consumption tax. Standard equipment on the Premium includes X-MODE with two modes, high descent control, a heated steering wheel, power front seats, heated front seats and rear charging ports. Navigation is offered as a manufacturer-installed option on the Premium.

The Premium S:HEV EX starts at 4,053,500 yen, a 220,000-yen step up that adds a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, navigation as standard and Subaru EyeSight X advanced driver-assistance technology. EyeSight X introduces functions intended to reduce driver workload on specific highways, including a hands-off driving function in traffic jams and speed control ahead of curves. The automaker's literature stresses that driver assistance technology should not be confused with autonomous driving shenanigans, a stance that speaks volumes in comparison to Tesla's Autopilot. The Premium EX can also be ordered with a factory-installed Harman Kardon audio system.

Exterior changes for 2027 are deliberately restrained: roof rails switch from dark gray to black and the e-Boxer ornament receives a new design. The Japanese Crosstrek rolls on 225/55 R18 all-season tires. Paint options include Ignition Red, Citron Yellow Pearl, Crystal White Pearl, Sand Dune Pearl, Ice Silver Metallic, Crystal Black Silica, Magnetite Gray Metallic and Sapphire Blue Pearl.

Subaru expects the redesigned JDM Crosstrek to sell at roughly 500 units per month in Japan.
